Project
3" rocket flight
Construction
- This rocket was constructed with 3" ABS for the body and 2" PVC for the engine. The engine is mounted in the center of the rocket with the aft portion of the rocket body perforated with holes to allow the engine exhaust to pull in air, preventing a vacuum and loss of thrust. There was no weight added to the rocket for ballast. Nosecone was made of solid wood turned by a wood working company and fins were made with foam core and paper.
Pros
- Excellent first flight, one of the best. Second flight failed.
- No ballast. Rocket weighed 12 lbs.
- Any accessories added to the front section of the rocket in the future will only increase aerodynamic stability.
Cons
- Nosecones are expensive.
- Transition fittings are causing excessive drag.
