Project
316 Static - IE24B Engine test
Construction
- This was revision B of the IE24 engine. 1/4-20 Nylon bolts were used in the nozzle assembly and steel 1/4-20 bolts were used in the end cap. In an effort to prevent the epoxy end cap from burning on the sides like the IE24A engine, epoxy was brushed on top of the fuel and igniter to prevent any gaps or open cracks between the epoxy end cap and the fuel. A 2:1 ratio of Kno3 and West systems epoxy was used as the end cap. This cap would burn and act as the smoke tracer and recovery delay.
Pros
- IE24 engine nozzle assembly is very easy to assemble.
- Nylon bolts weigh 75% less than steel bolts.
Cons
- The end cap still burned around the edges causing a premature failure of the engine.
- The end cap was ejected from the engine.
- Nylon bolts are not strong enough for this application.
