Project
1105 Static
Post-flight Analysis
- This two phase engine was designed to test the KNO3/epoxy Nakka plug between phases. It is not a scale model of the Sugar Shot to Space engine but it is close to a 1/8 scale of the projected SS2S rocket.
- Each of the two phase engines is made with five bates grains each 1.5" by 3" sorbitol / KNO3. The chamber is 1.5 " by 16.25" schedule 40 PVC
- The first test was performed as a reference of a single engine to compare with the two phase one. We had some problems with the hydraulic load cell gage so the measure thrust is not a good indicator of the engine performance.
Construction
Pros
- Overall the test was a success demonstrating the efficiency of the Nakka plug and the possibility of a two phase PVC engine.
Cons
- The nozzle is not a good design even though they withstood the test. On the two phase engine when the second segment lit the plug apparently blocked the nozzle causing the a nozzle blowout.
