Project
717 Hi/Lo engine static.
Static Analysis
- There was some discussion on the SUGPRO list a few weeks ago on the feasibility of a high thrust / short duration, low thrust / long duration composite engine similar to military applications. Alberto Gassol and I worked on a design to modify the current K380 core burning engine to accept five end burning engines off it's side. The theory being that after the core burner was spent, it would automatically light the five end burners creating a high thrust then a low thrust.
Construction
- The main engine casing was made from five 2" PVC tees. The bullhead of the tee would serve to house the end burner.
Pros
- Interesting theory and design.
- May still work with schedule 80 fittings.
Cons
- Too many joints proved to be the weak point of this design.
- May be more inefficient than straight core burners.
- More expensive than straight core burners.
